The Toe River Studio Tour Starts on Oak Avenue Weeks Before the Studios Open

October 22, 2026

The Toe River Arts Studio Tour spreads across the back roads of two counties, so where do you start? For the November tour, the starting point has been on the walls at 269 Oak Avenue in downtown Spruce Pine since October 17.

Studios open November 13–15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. From this week, that leaves about three weeks to walk through the Studio Tour Exhibition at the Toe River Arts Gallery before any studio door opens. The tour has showcased Mitchell and Yancey County artists since 1992, and Toe River Arts says participating artists also exhibit their work in its Spruce Pine gallery. Most people treat it as a side stop. This fall it's the most useful hour of the whole tour.

A room built like a catalog

Under the 2026 November Studio Tour policies, each tour participant could submit up to two pieces for the exhibition. Collaborating artists and galleries could also submit up to two. Every piece has to be for sale, priced at full retail value.

Those rules shape the room. One artist can't fill a wall, so the show works as a sampler. You get a piece or two from each participant, hung close enough to compare a glaze or a weave or a forged edge without driving between them. The prices are retail too, so the tag on the wall gives you a fair idea of what that artist's studio shelves will cost on tour weekend.

The work in the room is also fixed. Drop-off ran from September 28 to October 14, and the policies say nothing was accepted after that deadline. What's hanging now is what will be hanging for the rest of the run. Pieces leave as they sell, though, so a later visit may show less.

Why the preview matters more this November

As of mid-October, the Toe River Arts Studio Tour page shows the November 13–15 dates and links to the Spring 2026 and Fall 2025 guides. The November 2026 guide isn't posted there yet. Until the map comes out, the exhibition is the clearest public look at who's taking part.

The tour itself is spread out. Every site has to have a physical address in Mitchell or Yancey County, and every site is either a studio or a gallery. A studio can host up to five artists, including its own. Guest artists are encouraged, and two artists sharing a studio with separate bodies of work count as two participants. So one driveway can mean pottery, jewelry and fiber in a single stop, and the number of artists says little about the number of drives.

What's on the shelves is set by the rules as well. Artists are asked to limit tour-weekend sales to their own work or work by registered guest artists. If a piece on Oak Avenue catches your eye, that artist's studio is where you'll find more of the same hand.

With three days of seven-hour openings and sites scattered over two counties, most people can only fit in a share of the stops. A short list made on Oak Avenue in late October turns the weekend into a route.

The November tour that went missing once

This fall carries more weight because of 2024. Rutkowsky Pottery on Cane Branch Road in Burnsville keeps a public events archive, and it lists the November 8–10, 2024 Toe River Arts Studio Tour as cancelled after Hurricane Helene. The organizer's own list of past tours goes straight from Spring 2024 to Spring 2025, with no Fall 2024 entry.

The tour came back in June. Rutkowsky's archive shows its showroom open for the June 6–8, 2025 tour with a note of thanks for being there after the storm. It also mentions a Friday evening open house at the Kokol Gallery at Toe River Arts in Spruce Pine. In November 2025 the fall tour was back on its usual weekend, November 14–16, with more than 80 artists on a self-guided route. The 2025 preview reception was held at Kokol Gallery in Spruce Pine on that Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

So November 2026 is the second fall tour since the storm, and the first fall tour with a full spring tour already behind it. The pattern of a Friday-evening gathering in Spruce Pine looks set to continue. The 2026 policies list a Studio Tour reception volunteer shift on Friday, November 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The organizer hasn't posted a venue or public details yet, so check the Toe River Arts events calendar closer to the date.

Names from last November's map, and one from this year's

Until the 2026 guide comes out, the Fall 2025 guide is the best list of studios close to home. Treat it as last year's map, not this year's roster.

The 2025 Spruce Pine section listed these stops:

  • Jim Waters Studio
  • Constance Schulze / CS Designs
  • Kurt Anderson Studio
  • Stroup Hobby Shop
  • Katie Elkins
  • Studio 255
  • Brown Studio
  • Bob Doster's Backstreet Studio II

The Penland section listed Edwina Bringle, Cynthia Bringle, Kit Paulson and the Penland Gallery & Visitor Center.

Some 2026 participants are already announcing themselves. Potter Joy Tanner's events page says she'll be at Wood Song Pottery in Bakersville for November 13–15, open 10 to 5 Friday through Sunday. If you're starting from Spruce Pine, a Bakersville stop fits naturally into a loop through the Bakersville side of the county.

Matching names on the gallery wall against last year's guide is a quick way to see who's back and who's new.

Building the weekend from Oak Avenue out

The dates set the order. Here's how the next four weeks line up for anyone planning from downtown.

  1. Visit the exhibition before November 13. It runs October 17 through November 15 at 269 Oak Ave. Write down the artists whose two pieces made you stop, and their price points. If you want a particular piece, the wall is where to buy it, since all of it is for sale.
  2. Watch for the November guide and the reception. Once the guide is posted, match your short list to addresses and group the stops by direction. The Friday evening shift on November 13 points to a reception that night.
  3. Put Penland on Friday or Saturday. Penland's calendar has two exhibitions up that weekend: "Out of the Woods," September 29 through November 28, and "Unusual Care," October 6 through December 19. Both list viewing hours of Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those hours leave out Sunday, November 15, so a Penland stop has to happen earlier in the weekend.
  4. Save Sunday for the long drives. Every tour site has to stay open the full 10-to-5 window on all three days. The studios farthest out will still be open on the last afternoon, and Penland won't.
  5. Go back to Oak Avenue before the show comes down. The exhibition's last day is Sunday, November 15. Artists pick up their work November 17–22, and the gallery's next shows, the Holiday Exhibition and Figures & Places, open November 28.

The gallery's two-room setup changes on its own schedule, which our earlier post on why the upstairs room at Toe River Arts never matches what's downstairs covers. If you're filling out the rest of the season, see Spruce Pine's October cadence, which leads into November. Visitors heading toward the Yancey County half of the tour can find more on Burnsville.

Seeing a working studio up close can get you thinking about room to make things at home: a detached workshop, a barn with good light, a parcel quiet enough for a kiln.
